Hey Lewie,

Yeah - we had put in our entry paperwork/payment, which is non-refundable, and then kept working away at things. As 11/1 neared, we hit that spot I wrote about. I figured I could ask the IGF folks to take our entry page down, but I figured I'd rather have people come here and see we muffed up the entry than to just never hear about the game.

Hey there,

Erm, I'm a little confused, I came to this site via the link for the IGF entry for your game Heritage, but it seems that you are now saying you aren't entered?

http://www.igf.com/php-bin/entry2010.php?id=24

What's the deal?

Hey Chris - thanks. I remember meeting you, and it's always a shot in the arm to find someone remembers and is interested in the game!

I'd be happy to put you on the alpha list, and will do so now.

Hi Scott. Great to have met you at the "blogger dinner" at the 09 GDC. I keep an eye on your blog and I've been eagerly anticipating Heritage. I have to admit that you've made some stunning progress if you've got a playable game already at this point! Sorry to hear that it's not going to make this year's IGF, but as you've already pointed out, nothing's worse than submitting a half-complete game. I'd rather see something polished and slick myself -- nobody stops an artist halfway through a painting and says "Let me judge this before you continue."

If you've got something to show off in the intervening time, I'd love to see it. No reason that you can't generate some buzz about Heritage whilst it's still in development!

take care and good luck,
- Chris

Thanks for sharing such a painful, but important, step in your process so honestly and publicly.

I'm glad that you don't feel you need IGF for the game to succeed in the market.

I'd wish you luck, but really it's your wisdom and determination that will drive this thing through. Good health!

Thanks, guys. Yeah - I was extremely bummed about it yesterday, but feeling really good about it today - ready to push on harder now (yet, at a sustainable pace! Holy grail of development! Etc., al.).

I think we will have some chances coming up in the next six months to get some good exposure - and I think the game will be in a good spot by then to take advantage of them. One of the problems we've had so far is that the game has never been far enough along to take full advantage of the events we want to show it at. I'm looking forward to that flipping around. Also, I have some plans in the PR and Marketing areas that I'm looking forward to jumping on.

So no - we're not waiting on anything. The IGF buzz would have been good if we'd gotten any, but I'm not too concerned about it overall. It's more my pride that has taken a couple crotch-shots.

I'm sorry to hear you won't make it for this year's IGF, but I'm happy that you won't be submitting a buggy or incomplete entry. I'm sure it stings, but it really sounds like you're making the right choice here.

So, what's next, then? You're setting a self-imposed deadline, but is there some other opportunity for exposure like the IGF before next IGF, or will you just have to build up buzz organically (or wait 'til next year)?

Regardless, despite not being in Boston, I'd love to take a look and give feedback whenever it'd be useful for you to have it.

Good luck!

Always a tough choice, but better to do something awesome than rush to meet an external deadline. Sounds like you're in good spirits given everything. Best of luck, dude.
