Death of an Indie Studio Slides

March 24th, 2011 by Macguffin in News

Sorry for the delay on this, but the slides for my Death of an Indie Studio talk are now up on Slideshare.

They may not make a ton of sense if you weren’t there, since I used the slides as visuals to highlight or counterpoint what I was saying.  I plan to do the talk again at Boston Post Mortem at some point, and when I do, I’ll either get it recorded or update my notes to high enough quality that I can post them.

Cool, thanks for putting it up. As you said, some parts don’t make too much sense. A recording would be great, even if it’s just audio. When is Boston Post Mortem?

Also, at the end you mention “I’m making a game”. Oh really? Please do tell. ;)

Tentatively, I’ll be doing it some time mid or near the end of the summer. Post Mortem itself is every month here in Boston, it’s just booked up for talks for a while.

As for the game I’m working on – in time. :D For now, I can say that I’m making it in Unity, it’s much smaller in scope and different in design from Macguffin’s previous work, and I plan to work on it until it is done to my satisfaction.

But since you’re the only one that reads the blog (heh), you’ll probably know first.

It’s like my personal message service. ;) Nah, but seriously. There might be a bunch of people checking it out, but simply not replying to the blog posts.

Anyway, looking forward to both a recording of the talk and info about the new game, especially the latter.

So first you don’t mention him in that one blog post a while ago, then you give him the title of sole surviving supporter… Now >I< am sad.

Bleh! You both have a special place in my heart. :) I’m just scatterbrained and overworked. Apologies!

    I was there,..

    Thanks for the slides!

I took your advice and decided on learning to code( C#) and it has been fantastic so far. It’s like I am a kid again making ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ games with BasicA.
    /cheers

Thanks for posting these! Was great info you gave at PAX. Helped inspire me and some friends to start something up. Thanks for all the great info.

I think I’m currently on the Idyllic Prehistory part ;) It’s good to get some advice (with a few points thoroughly hammered home!) from someone who’s been through it all.

I’d be intrigued to know the gist of slides 56-58: they are thoroughly unguessable.

Hah! That was my lead-in to explaining how time equals money – it was to say that of course we all understand at some level that we need money to live, but that I only had the lesson drilled in myself after dealing with explicit stuff like, I can get sounds made for me and spend $X, or I can find them myself and spend time.

Glad you found it useful. Thanks!

So, any news for the non Twitter followers?

Sadly, guys, I think I’m putting my indie dev efforts on indefinite hold. These days I’m spending a lot of time with family, and then using what’s left to start messing around with some DIY electronics projects and 3D printing. And occasionally, I’m playing a game. :)

I’m tempted to say something like, “maybe someday”, but given where I’m at, it’d be a hell of a long way off someday.

Have fun, but expect Romtos and me to pop up again and remind you of the debt of blood and sweat you owe us! Especially the blood part.
    :P

Crap. I’ve fallen into some sort of game dev version of A Christmas Carol. :D

Hey, a less than month old conversation!
    Well, I’m up-to-date as well again. :)
It’s always good to find out somebody owes me blood.

Greed Corp is on sale on Steam again. Mr. Macmillan I hereby challenge you to a game again.
Maybe by being beaten at the game a few times by me you will be able to do a small step towards saving your soul…

Just over 4 months quiet. Time to post.
    1) The forum intially appeared to be gone, though after logging in I noticed macguffingames.com/forums still works.
    2) Allheroesdie.com is dead. :( I’m a sad Romtos.

So, what are you people up to?

    Also, blood debt.

    Hah! How’s it going? :D

Yeah – the forums are currently bombed to hell and back with spammer posts. I’m working now with K. Adam to either bring them down (after pulling all the content I think is worth keeping and saving it to the open internet somewhere), or fixing it. Probably the former.

AHD was up for renewal, and I decided not to renew it.

What’s the word lately? I may renew AHD. I may have some intent to work on the game as I can, slowly over time. I’ll have a post on it within the next couple weeks. :) But I had a fantastic experience at PAX East that has rekindled my interest to some extent.

    Impressively quick reply. :)

I think AHD would do fine as a side project, a hobby. I think it has more change to have a future if you treat it like that, for starters. It would be really cool to see it revived.

If you work on it again, I suggest not being shy about releasing work to the community. I think it’ll motivate more if you get regular feedback. Looking forward to your post in any case.

Wonder when Therlun hops back in these comments. :D
