   I get the idea that you click on a hex and select the explore option, and then assign a number of military units (with a hero?) but I'm never able to get the explore button to enable. This is possibly because I only have 5 units to send, but I'm not certain as there isn't much in the way of documentation.

   You select a hex with a hero, you assign a number of military units (just like what you did) AND you select the hex again because by that time it's deselected. Then the exploration button will enable.

   Romtos is correct. Also, This will be fixed in the next update.
