   It's a bit unclear to me what's happening. I have tested on two children now, and I seem to discern some pattern, but it's somewhat unclear.
   With the first child, I spend time with it. Firs two times new traits. Third time an upgrade. Then two times no effect, so I stopped for a few years. Then, when trying at a later age, I could upgrade twice again, after which it stopped functioning again.

   The second child, I could gain new traits five times. Then, no effect. After waiting for a year or three, I could gain an upgrade. Four times no effect. Then another upgrade. Then no effect.

   What determines when spending time with children does anything, and what determines what it does? (New thread/upgrade existing thread)? It's seems rather random now.

   I've had a similar experience. I think there must be a random factor somewhere. Interestingly, when I had two heroes taking care of their children the same turn, it pretty much always either gave both a trait or gave neither a trait.

   Hmmm. This is definitely a spot where we have a system, and haven't explained it at all.

   The spending time with a child has an effect if you do it within certain age brackets. So if you spend time with a child between one and five, you get a new starter trait for them.

   I'd need to double check the code to make sure this is exactly what we have in there now, but it should look something like:

   - When a child is born, they have no traits.
   - Age 1-5 - If the hero spends one turn with their child during this period, the player gets to choose the first personality trait. If not, randomly selected.
   - Age 1-5 - If the hero spends one turn with the child during this period, the player gets to choose the first physical trait. If not, randomly selected.
   - Age 6-10 - If the hero spends one turn with them during this period, the player gets to upgrade one of the personality or physical traits.
   - Age 11-15 - If the hero spends one turn with them during this period, the player gets to upgrade the other trait.
   - Age 18 - Class trait. Player always gets to choose this.

   So - like I said, this system would be totally opaque to you guys. We either need to rework it, or do a good job of explaining it. I'd love your thoughts on the possibilities of either or both.

   I think it would be a good idea if there was an visible event associated with children coming of age that prompted you to pick their class. Right now it's easy to not notice when you have a trait that can be bought or upgraded, both in adult heroes and children.

   Actually, it might be useful to flag up the phases of development with story stuff about initiation rituals or stages of education or what-have-you (maybe flagged up more prominently the first time each stage happens, with a briefer explanation for later children.)

   It'd also be nice if children, and non-council adults, had a tendency to go off and do trait-affecting stuff when your back was turned. (Little Spankford doesn't want to be a war-leader, dammit, he just. wants to. dance...)

   RE: Events notifying you that something is upgradeable: We actually toyed around with this, and ended up of the opinion that, eventually, it would just pop WAAAAAAY too many events to make it feasible. Maybe if there were a little icon that appeared somewhere when an un-slotted family member could be upgraded? Sort of like the idle peasant notification in Warcraft 3?

   RE: un-slotted family doing things behind your back: Aaaaaaaaaabsolutely. This has been in the works for a long time (since the inception of the game, actually) but requires the ability to target random, unslotted family members with events, first. Trust me, as soon as the code can support that, I'm going to go absolutely hog wild (and you'll see changes in events like the Surma Pup, the inept potion mixer and the dark magic experimenter.)

   I think it would be a good idea to give the child a small XP bump if you spend time with them beyond the allotted once/5 years.
